In the hope of finally putting an end to this old issue: 1. Do not get drivers from random driver download sites. You don't know what you're really getting and may end up with malware. 2. For many older HP printers, you can use HP's Universal Driver ( LIST OF SUPPORTED PRINTERS but I predict that you will not like it - if you can actually get it to install. Personally, I would only use the HP Universal Driver as an absolute last resort. See Universal Print Driver Solution and Feature Guide Download HP UPD -> 3. If HP says that you can use the driver included with Windows 7, then follow happyraver98's advice and use the Windows Update button in the appropriate window of the Add Printer wizard: 4. If like happyraver98 you'd rather not wait the fairly long time that Windows Update takes to download all of the extra printer drivers, use Internet Explorer (only) and go to the Microsoft Update Catalog to search for and download your driver: Important: there will likely be 2 or 3 entries that appear to be the same; you must open them and determine the architecture for which the driver is intended. X86 = 32 bit AMD64 = 64 bit IA64 = Intel Itanium 64-bit (not very common; used, e.g., for XP Pro x64 edition) Drivers downloaded from the Microsoft Update Catalog will not be as easy to install as drivers obtained from the printer manufacturer ( HP) or through the Add Printer wizard. Typically, you will download a *. CAB file. You must then extract the files inside the *. CAB file using something like 7-zip or Win RAR. Then run the Add Printer wizard, click the Have Disk button, browse to the folder where you extracted the contents of the *. CAB file, and select the *.inf file.
