It wasn't so long ago that Channel 5 offered quite an array of football coverage, usually from the Europa League, Serie A and even the occasional England international. So it was pleasing to see them snaffle Saturday night Football League highlights and pledge to return them to a more sociable hour than the BBC's post-pub sofa snooze slot. Unfortunately their first effort over the weekend was one of a broadcaster evidently out of practice at covering the national game. Channel 5's first attempt at Football League highlights on Saturday night, presented by George Riley and Kelly Cates, had quite a few flaws that need to be ironed out I just can't agree with Brian Barwick, writing in Monday's Daily Mail, that it was a 'good first effort' and that ' Channel 5 should be pleased.' You only had to witness how the footballon5 Twitter hashtag descended from anticipation and even appreciation for the earlier show to bemusement and outright annoyance by the end of 85 minutes of mind-scrambling, hotchpotch television to realise that drastic changes will be needed immediately. The first gripe is obviously the many, many advert breaks but Channel 5 can't help that. Besides, with Sky and BT Sport monopolising football coverage these days, it's something we've become accustomed to. Most perplexing was the running order, which simply had no rhyme or reason. Credit must go to the small army of editors and producers in the back room putting together clips from 35 games in the space of four hours but the viewer was left with a sore head given all the flitting between divisions. It overshadowed their stellar work. Cates and Riley line up at the start of Channel 5's Football League debut on Saturday night Sheffield Wednesday's win over Bristol City seemed like an arbitrary starting point anyway but then switching to Sheffield United's humiliating loss in League One came completely out of.
